About Us

The department of Middle Eastern and African History at the Tel Aviv University  is one of the Leading departments worldwide in the Middle Eastern Studies field. The department's teachers and researchers are renowned in the Middle Eastern Studies community for their achievements and researches.

The Studies at the department are focused on the history of the peoples of the Middle East since the rise of Islam and until today with special focus on the modern age (the last 250 years). The courses offered by the department's lecturers cover the Arab world, Turkey, Iran and Central Asia from various points of view - Political and Diplomatic History, Intellectual History, Social, Cultural and Financial History. Hand in hand with the focus on the modern era, basic courses on the history of the region in the mid ages and the early modern era are offered. Beyond that, the department provides its students with a regular offer of courses concerning the history of Africa from the pre-colonial era and until today.
